Why Is My iMessage Not Working With Only One Person?

Why Is My iMessage Not Working With Only One Person?

iMessage in iOS allows you to send and receive instant messages over the internet instead of your cellular services. However, there are cases where your iMessages won’t get through to a specific contact.

Your iMessage may not be working with a single person or contact because the other person may not have an internet connection, or they may not have the iMessage feature turned on. Another possible reason is if this particular recipient has a network connectivity issue.

If none of the above applies, an easy hack is to go to your settings > Messages > Send & Receive, tap your profile > sign out to disable iMessage. Then, go to Settings > Messages > re-enable iMessage and sign in. Ask your contact to do the same on their device.

In many cases this will fix the issue.

Why is iMessage not sending messages to one specific person even though they have an iPhone?

The following are frequent reasons why your iMessage is not sending to one specific person:

1. The other person has blocked you

If you can’t send an iMessage to one specific person who has an iPhone, it may be because they have blocked you.

If possible, check with the person that you are not in their blocked contacts list. If you are (and it’s unintentional),, they can try removing your contact from their contact list, this may resolve the issue.

2. There may be an issue with your iMessage thread

Sometimes your message thread with a specific person might be problematic. What you can do is:

  1. backup that specific thread
  2. Delete the thread
  3. Create a new thread with the same contact
  4. Try resending the iMessage.

3. The Contact on your device may have an issue

Try deleting the contact and recreating the contact from scratch. This often will resolve the issue, and you should be able to send iMessages to this contact again.

4. Your Apple ID keeps you from sending an iMessage

Sometimes the Apple ID is causing the issue. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Open “Settings”.
  2. Select “Messages” > “Send and Receive”.
  3. Tap on your Apple ID shown on screen.
  4. Then choose “Sign Out”.
  5. Sign back in using your Apple ID and password. This should resolve your issue.

5. Your iMessage is sent as SMS

You may have the “Send as SMS” setting enabled, so when you don’t have an active internet connection the message is sent as a text message instead of iMessage.

If you only want to send iMessages and don’t wish to send SMS messages even when your internet is off, turn off the feature as follows:

  1. Open “Settings”.
  2. Go to “Messages”.
  3. Toggle off the “Send as SMS” switch.

6. Your cellular network keeps iMessage from sending

If you are on a call and try to send an iMessage to your contact, your iMessage may not go through. Some cellular networks do not support simultaneous data and voice calls.

If you are using your cellular data, your iMessage may not send. Only faster GSM networks and 3G/4G support simultaneous data and voice calls.

Try turning on your Wi-Fi and resending your iMessage.

  1. Go to “Settings”.
  2. Choose “Wi-Fi”.
  3. Turn the Wi-Fi switch on.

7. Your device is preventing your iMessage from sending

Your device may be glitching because of high resource usage. You can simply try restarting your device and check if the issue is resolved – it works most of the time.

  1. Press and hold the power button until a turn off option appears.
  2. Slide the power off option to turn off your iPhone.
  3. Wait for a couple of minutes and turn your device back on by pressing and holding the power button.

8. Your network settings may prevent iMessage from sending

Sometimes a specific network setting does not suit your device and it may keep an iMessage from sending. Try resetting your network settings:

  1. Go to “Settings” > “General”.
  2. Tap “Reset”
  3. Select “Reset Network Settings”.

Why does my iMessage only work with some contacts?

There can be multiple reasons why your iMessage feature only works with some contacts and not with the others. For problematic contacts:

  1. They may have not enabled the iMessage feature on their phone.
  2. They may not be using an iPhone.
  3. They may have an internet connectivity issue
  4. They may have network settings incompatible with iMessage
  5. You may have blocked them or they may have blocked you

Resolving these issues are imperative for iMessage to work. Refer to the previous section for solutions to each of these possible reasons.

Why are my iMessages sending Green to only one person?

Here are some reasons why your iMessage is showing green for a specific contact::

  1. iMessages appear in blue. If your message appears as green, this means it was sent as a text message instead of an iMessage.
  2. iMessage is a feature specific to iPhone users. Android does not support iMessages. So you will see green messages if sending to an Android user, or when you don’t have an active internet connection.
  3. If your iMessages appear green, it may mean there is a problem with your settings. Check to make sure your iMessage service in enabled under settings:
    1. Go to “Settings” > “Messages”.
    2. Toggle on the iMessage switch to enable the iMessage feature on your phone.

Why are my iMessages green when texting another iPhone?

iMessage have a blue bubble and if your phone shows a green bubble this means that the message is sent as an SMS/MMS.

There can be a couple of reasons why your iMessages are green when texting to another iPhone such as:

  • You do not have an active internet connection.
  • You or your recipient’s iMessage feature is turned off.

How do I turn iMessage back on for one contact?

You cannot turn on the iMessage feature for a single contact, it can only be enabled for all contacts. To turn on the iMessage, follow the below steps:

  1. Go to “Settings” > “Messages”.
  2. Toggle the switch on of the “iMessage” feature.

How do I know if someone blocked me on iMessage?

After you send an iMessage to another iPhone, it will normally show as “Delivered” on your iPhone . This “Delivered” notice will then turn into “Read” when the other person has read your iMessage – provided the person has read receipts turned on.

If your iMessage suddenly stopped showing “Delivered” for your sent iMessages, it may mean the other person has blocked you.

Be aware, however, that the absence of a “Delivered” notification may also be due to reasons other than your contact having blocked you.

Does green bubble mean blocked?

A green bubble does not mean you are blocked, it is an indication that your message was sent as an SMS/MMS instead of iMessage.

Also, android phones do not have the iMessage feature, so iPhone messages to Android devices get sent as SMS/MMS, which results in a green bubble showing on the sender’s phone.

To find out if you are blocked by the other person, check the “Delivered” notes after sending an iMessage (see previous section).

How can you tell if someone has muted your phone?

If the other person has put their phone messages from your number on mute, they won’t be alerted when you send a message.

To know if someone has muted you on iMessage, you can send a message from another profile. If the recipient has read receipts enabled, you’ll get a read receipt for your message. If your second profile gets a receipt while your first doesn’t, this likely means the recipient has muted your first profile.

You can put the messages from a certain person on mute by following these steps:

  1. Open your “Messages” app.
  2. Open the thread of the person you would like to mute.
  3. Click on the arrow down button on the contact picture.
  4. Click on the “Info” portion.
  5. Toggle on the “Hide Alerts” switch.
  6. You can see a “Half Moon” icon on the contact you have muted.
  7. To unmute the contact, slide the muted contact to the left and then tap the bell icon.

What happens when you mute someone on iMessage?

When you mute someone on iMessage you won’t be getting any message alerts from that person. However, you will still receive messages sent by him/her.

The person will never know that you have muted him/her unless they send a message from another profile and you read that message.

Can you send iMessage to someone you blocked?

Blocking someone does not affect your ability to send messages to them, it blocks the other person from sending messages to your device.

If you have blocked someone and you are trying to send them a message, the other person will receive the message unless he/she has also blocked you.

What happens when your phone is on Do Not Disturb and someone texts you?

When your phone is on “Do Not Disturb” mode, all your calls and notifications will be silenced including text messages.

So if someone texts you while your device is on “Do Not Disturb”, you will receive the message but no notification for that message.

To set your phone on “Do Not Disturb” mode:

  1. Open your “Control Center” – the gesture to open the control center will depend on your device.
  2. You will see a “Half Moon” icon which represents “Do Not Disturb”.
  3. Tap on the icon to enable “Do Not Disturb” mode.

You can also schedule your phone to go on “Do Not Disturb” mode at specific times:

  1. In the control center, Tap and Hold the “Half Moon” icon
  2. This brings up a menu.
  3. Choose one of the presets or tap “Schedule” to customize the settings.

How do I silence one person on my iPhone?

To put a silent ringtone for a specific contact:

  1. Open the “Phone” app and search for the contact you want to silent.

  5. Toggle off the switch of “Hide Alerts”.
  6. You can see a “Half Moon” sign on the contact you have muted.

Can you silence a contact without blocking?

You can silence a contact without blocking them by putting a silent ringtone on that specific contact. After you do, when that specific person calls you, you will not hear the ringtone.

In addition to silencing the ringtone, you can also mute their messages so that you do not get notified when that specific person sends you a message.

What does half moon icon mean on iPhone?

The half moon icon indicates the “Do Not Disturb” mode is on. If you see a “Half Moon” sign on your lock screen, it means you have enabled the “Do Not Disturb” feature on your phone.

“Do Not Disturb” feature silences all the calls and notifications for some time. You can schedule the time for “Do Not Disturb” or you can turn it off and on manually (see earlier section).

You can enable “Do Not Disturb” by opening the control center of your phone and schedule it.

Why is my iPhone not notifying me when I receive a text from one person?

If you are not getting message alerts from one person, it may mean you have put that specific contact’s messages on mute – either intentionally or by mistake.

You can check your Messages app and check if you see a “Half Moon” icon at the top of the contact’s message thread. If a “Half Moon” icon is displayed, it means you have muted that person’s message alerts.

To disable the mute:

  1. Drag the message thread of that specific contact to the left..
  2. Tap the bell button: the “Hide Alerts” option will be disabled.

Now you will get a message notification the next time that contact sends you a message.

Why do I have a text message notification but no message on iPhone?

Sometimes your message app starts misbehaving and showing a text message notification when there is none. These messages are known as phantom messages or ghost messages.

To get rid of such messages, try the following:

1. Force close the messages app

Try force closing the messages app. This sometimes solves the issue.

  1. Double tap your home button to see all your currently opened apps.
  2. Swipe off the app from the screen to force close it
  3. Check if the problem is solved.

2. Reset all settings

You can reset all settings to get rid of the ghost messages:

  1. Go to “Settings” > “General”.
  2. Choose “Reset” > “Reset all Settings”.

3. Ask Siri to open messages and read unread messages to you

To get rid of ghost messages, you can ask Siri to read unread messages to you.

This is especially helpful when you can’t find unread messages yourself even though your iPhone is showing you a text message notification.

4. Force restart your phone

You can force restart your phone by:

  1. Pressing “Volume Down” and “Power” button simultaneously for iPhone 7 and 7 plus. Keep holding the buttons until an Apple logo appears on screen.
  2. For iPhone 8 and 8 plus, quickly press the “Volume Up” and “Volume Down” button and then keep pressing the “Power Button” until an Apple logo appears on screen.

5. Delete all messages from that specific contact

If you keep getting ghost message notifications from a specific contact, delete all messages from that contact. You can delete the entire message thread from that specific person.

This solution worked for some users.
